The most common type of faux finishing, spongeing is usually done on walls, cloth and even furniture. Typically, the first base coat is a lighter colour and the painter uses a sponge to apply a darker, contrasting colour on top. This creates a subtle mottled or textured effect that adds depth and dimension to a surface, sometimes mimicking the appearance of natural materials like stone or marble. 

Ragging/French Wash involves dabbing a dry or wet cloth over a light base coat (while the base coat is still wet) to create a mottled or textured effect on the surface. If you want a contrasting finish, the dry or wet cloth is dipped in a contrasting colour and then applied to the base coat surface. This technique offers an affordable and distinctive way to add a sense of depth to walls. Not to mention, it is a popular finish among various interior design styles. 

Rag rolling is a decorative technique where a rolled-up rag or cloth is used to apply paint to a surface, creating a textured or patterned effect. At Brilliant Coatings, we use a special rag roller dipped in paint and then roll it onto the painted base coat layer. Usually, two contrasting shades are used, but it is possible to rag roll onto a base coat layer as well, just to create a consistently textured finish. Similar to regular ragging, rag rolling is suitable for a range of design styles. 

Venetian plaster is a technique that uses thin layers of plaster applied with a trowel to create a smooth, marble-like finish on walls. This method involves applying multiple layers of plaster, followed by polishing to a high sheen. The result is a luxurious, polished look that can add a touch of sophistication and elegance to any space. It's a popular choice for both modern and classic interior designs.

Lime washing is a traditional technique that uses a mixture of lime and water to create a soft, textured finish on walls. This method involves applying the lime wash with a brush in sweeping strokes, which creates a unique, velvety appearance that develops character over time. Lime washing is ideal for creating a natural, rustic look and is particularly well-suited to older homes or those aiming for a historic or cottage-style aesthetic.
